Old Time Sayings that are still Pertinent Today

The Old time sayings I remember as a child

Those old fashioned sayings that my grandmother and grandfather used to say keep coming back at me.

As I have always said, those old wise sayings, and the actual meanings of old sayings can prove to be very enlightening. When you look into the origins of old sayings you can learn a great deal about yourself and the world around you.

For example, as I mentioned before, my favorite old time sayings is “An Apple a Day, Keeps the Doctor Away”.

From my article originally posted years ago:

An Apple A Day?

During the Bible times the Greeks and Arabs believed that the apple healed all ailments. Early in this century, the American Medicine magazine said about apples, "...therapeutically effective in all conditions of acidosis, gout, rheumatism, jaundice, all liver and gallbladder troubles, nervous and skin diseases, caused by sluggish liver, hyperacidity, and sates of autointoxication." Today's modern health and medical fields agree the apple is the "all-around health food."

Here are some healing powers of an apple:
• They lower bad cholesterol and high blood pressure.
• The juices are highly effective virus fighters.
• They help stabilize blood sugar, a factor in controlling diabetes.
• They suppress appetite without keeping you from getting nutrients for your body.
• They prevent constipation or help treat diarrhea.
• They contain chemicals which are vital in stopping cancer.
• An apple each day, can boost the HDL (good cholesterol) in the blood, while reducing the LDL (bad cholesterol), which is what gives us clogging of the arteries, which can lead to heart attacks or strokes.

The reason is the pectin in an apple. Pectin is a soluble fiber. Example: What is squeezed out to make jelly. This makes a natural chemical reaction with the vitamin C, to form a shield around the heart, which prevents cardiovascular disease. The apple is a rich source of natural sugar. It prevents the body from pumping out too much insulin which, in turn, helps bring down blood cholesterol and blood pressure.

Dieters should eat apples constantly. An apple raises the blood glucose levels and makes you feel fuller; therefore, one will not eat as much but will still be eating good food, not processed diet food stuff.

Apple juice also helps keep you healthy. People who eat apples regularly have far fewer cOlds and upper respiratory problems.

There are a great many indications that apples may fight certain type of cancer. The reason for this is, apples are loaded with natural acids which successfully block cancer formation.

The apple is the only healing food capable of solving two completely different problems at the same time - constipation and diarrhea. The pectin fiber is the healing factor, and in used in the over the counter remedy, Kaopectate.

Another hint from Nature? An apple is also the original toothbrush. It cleans your teeth of food and plaque, and prevents tooth decay.
